Fear in Zimbabwe

Dear All worrying about someone reading a book compared to the letter below seems pretty petty to me,please read on:

This has been sent to me by my dads friend Christine Brett via the Lay secretary of Allerton Deanery Synod.   I know that you are probably as aware as I am of the terrible plight of people in Zimbabwe but this just brings another dimension.  I feel I must do as the writer asks and pass it on and maybe there are other things that some of us can do.

John Dickinson wrote on 2 Dec I have just received this forward from a relative in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.  If you want to feel a little better about the current problems of the UK, it will show you that things can get worse.  The saddening thing is that the UK bears no little responsibility for what is going on in Zimbabwe.  If you feel you can help by making this damning evidence more widely known, then please do so, but in any event please read it - and reflect.

Letter from Zimbabwe sent in by  John Winter 27 Nov 2008

I reckon that these are the last days of TKM and ZPF. The darkest hour is always before dawn.

We are all terrified at what they are going to destroy next........I mean they are actually ploughing down brick and mortar houses and one family with twin boys of 10 had no chance of salvaging anything when 100 riot police came in with AK47's and bulldozers and demolished their beautiful house - 5 bedrooms and pine ceilings - because it was 'too close to the airport', so we are feeling extremely insecure right now.

You know - I am aware that this does not help you sleep at night, but if you do not know - how can you help? Even if you put us in your own mental ring of light and send your guardian angels to be with us - that is a help -but I feel so cut off from you all knowing I cannot tell you what's going  on here simply because you will feel uncomfortable. There is no ways we can leave here so that is not an option.

I ask that you all pray for us in the way that you know how, and let me know that you are thinking of us and sending out positive vibes... that's all. You can't just be in denial and pretend/believe it's not going on.

To be frank with you, it's genocide in the making and if you do not believe me, read the Genocide Report by Amnesty International which says we are - IN  level 7 - (level 8 is after it's happened and everyone is in denial).

If you don't want me to tell you these things-how bad it is-then it means you have not dealt with your own fear, but it does not help me to think you are turning your back on our situation. We need you, please, to get  the news OUT that we are all in a fearfully dangerous situation here. Too many people turn their backs and say - oh well, that's what happens in Africa

This Government has GONE MAD and you need to help us publicize our plight---or how can we be rescued? It's a reality! The petrol queues are a reality, the pall of smoke all around our city is a reality, the thousands of homeless people sleeping outside in 0 Celsius with no food, water, shelter and bedding are a reality. Today a family approached me, brother of the gardener's wife with two small children. Their home was trashed and they will have to sleep outside. We already support 8 adult people and a child on this property, and electricity is going up next month by 250% as is water.

How can I take on another family of 4 -----and yet how can I turn them away to sleep out in the open?

I am not asking you for money or a ticket out of here - I am asking you to FACE the fact that we are in deep and terrible danger and want you please to pass on our news and pictures. So PLEASE don't just press the delete button! Help best in the way that you know how.

Do face the reality of what is going on here and help us SEND OUT THE WORD.. The more people who know about it, the more chance we have of the United Nations coming to our aid. Please don't ignore or deny what's happening.
Some would like to be protected from the truth BUT then, if we are eliminated, how would you feel? 'If only we knew how bad it really was we could have helped in some way'.

[I know we chose to stay here and that some feel we deserve what's coming to us]

For now,--- we ourselves have food, shelter, a little fuel and a bit of money for the next meal - but what is going to happen next? Will they start on our houses? All property is going to belong to the State now. I want to send out my Title Deeds to one of you because if they get a hold of those, I can't fight for my rights.

Censorship!----We no longer have SW radio [which told us everything that was happening] because the Government jammed it out of existence - we don't have any reporters, and no one is allowed to photograph. If we had reporters here, they would have an absolute field day. Even the pro-Government Herald has written that people are shocked, stunned, bewildered and blown mindless by the wanton destruction of many folks homes, which are supposed to be 'illegal' but for which a huge percentage actually do have licenses.

Please! - do have some compassion and HELP by sending out the articles and personal reports so that something can/may be done.

'I am one. I cannot do everything, ---but I can do something.. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do, I should do. And what I should do, by the grace of God,
I will do..'

Please send this on to everyone in your address book.  We send jokes out without blinking an eyelid.  We don't get told this on the news in  South Africa , we only get told what they want us to hear.  We all have a chance to do something, even though the something is by pressing forward to as many people as possible.  Let's stop talking and let's start doing!  There is power in prayer, there is also power in more people knowing about this than you in my address book.  This is going to America , Dubai , Australia , France , South Africans all over  South Africa , the UK .  By forwarding this to all in my address book I have done something.  The world needs to know what is going on.

Selling books at a faster rate than Prescott

I must say selling books and getting people to read them is hard work.I believe that how good a book is isn't that important in the grand scheme of things.Largely it's about a book being accessible enough to be picked up.If you can hold a book and read a few pages then you might consider buying it and then reading it.A friend of my dads a writer called Pat Anderson has renewed my faith a bit this week by pointing out that my ratio of hours put into selling books to sales has been luckier than John Prescotts recently. He spent a week aboard the QE2 and sold 7 books.I went to Carnforth the other weekend and sold 3 books during 6 hours on a stall selling 'More Scouse,Vicar'.I can't imagine how much a week on the QE2 costs but I think that it will cost a sight more than 7 books?I try not to subscribe to enjoying other peoples misfortune but I can't help smile at that.I know that would have tickled my dad.

Carnforth,Lancs weekend 4-5th October 08

I went to Carnforth Railway Station to their first ever 40's weekend last week to try and flogg a few copies of ,'More Scouse,Vicar!' and met truly fantastic 40's enthusiasts.Amongst them were some seriously lovely, eccentric people, all enjoying the fun of dressing up and appreciating everyones elses efforts. On the station platform I met a Homeguard called,'Elvis' who helped to maintain order he was a gent and helped Jaq and I carry our tables.Joyce the Snood lady and her hubby were others,I couldn't stop laughing at most of what Joyce said,at 80 years old, what a warm and charismatic women, she's been making Snoods since 1942 and hubby hadn't been idle either having recently published his 3rd book.I also met some great soldiers and a  dashing Homeguard officer who admitted he also quite enjoyed getting dressed up with his wife as Her Flick and Holga. What a laugh we had, what a great set of people. However there was one soul that managed to sap our life force out of us a bit,the stressed out cafe man,he didn't like our idea of giving tiny samples of Scouce for free to passers by?Some people? The Scouse was a big success with a fair few people commenting on how it took them back to the tastes and smells of the day. It's a simple dish, fresh and full of flavour, made from pototo, carrot, onion and Oxo,no fat, cheap and delicious.

Thankyou for being so lovely to us everybody we met at Carnforth,Louise & Jaq

Letter from the Bishop of Liverpool.

My dad had written a list of 50 people that he was going to send a copy of the book to and I decided that I should write to them to let them know that he wanted them to read his book. The Bishop of Liverpool and the Vicar of Christchurch, Bootle being two of the 50 names. I received a fantastic letter from The Bishop Of Liverpool-Reverend James Jones, this it what he said below:

'Dear Louise,

You wrote to me on 11th April letting me know that your father had wanted me to read his book 'More Scouse,Vicar!' I have obtained a copy and before finding time myself to read it,passed it to two sisters who were brought up in  the Dingle and lived through the weeks of the Blitz.I thought you would like to know what they have written to me;

'The book was totally fascinating from a Liverpudlian point of view ,and that the reality of wartime situations, both local and military, were brough to life. As for the day to day lives of the people, they were portrayed with such vividness and honesty. Even the most tragic happenings were interspersed with typical Mersyside bluntness and of course humour. We found it was hard to put down once we started to read'.

They were surprised at the close relatilonship described between the Anglican Vicar and Catholic Priest. This would ,of course been most unusual in that area at that time.I wonder if your father had based this on a real -life friendship that he had observed?

Thank you for letting me know about this book and I look forward to having an opportunity to read it.

 God bless you,

 James  of  Liverpool.'

In response to the Bishops letter I contacted my Auntie Iris,my dads oldest sister and she informed me that the friendship in the book had been based on two real friends from the early fifties in Liverpool during their childhood .  The Vicar was from Christchurch,Bootle,Liverpool and called The Reverend William Chipping and the Priest was from St Monicas called Father Fitzpatrick. At the time the Priests from St.Monicas used to live next door to the Vicarage in Bootle. The two men used to meet under cover of darkness and share the odd glass of wine and a Woodbine together. I wouldn't have known this without asking my auntie iris because my dad knew a lot of Vicars,Priests,Rabbis and had freinds from all faiths.

My dad and his book

Having a book published was a life long dream of my dads, it meant

the world to him.He refused to go out for meals with friends and family, turned down

party invitations, delayed meeting his nephew from Australia until the book was

published.I said,'dad don't put your life on hold for that book'.Did he listen?

Did he heckers? This book was too important to him.I feel I have to ensure that it

is read.My dad was a very thoughtful and kind man.He had a great sense of humour

and I am so proud that he was my dad.

Interview on City Talk

I spoke to Dean Sullivan about the book,he used to play Jimmy Corkhill on Brookside.I was quite nervous but Dean was very supportive and I relaxed after a minute or two.It was a great help as soon as the bookshops in Liverpool knew I was on the radio speaking to Dean they quite quickly agreed to stock 'More Scouse,Vicar!' in the shops. This was my main ambition for the book, to make Scousers aware of it.
